Music and Lifestyle television station MTV Base was in Lagos
last Sunday and their aim was to thrill. They hosted the well-publicised
All-stars party at the Federal Palace hotel. As usual, there was a large
presence of Paparazzi as one steps on the red carpet, even though there were
very little celebrities around. The show as advertised was mainly for Lagosians
to have fun and meet with their favourite stars on parade.
The show kicked off about 10 pm. Prior to the show proper,
there was a brief press conference held to intimate the press on why the show
was holding. According to Senior Vice President of MTV, Alex Okosi, The show is
actually a continent-wide tour that has been moving across Africa. It is said
to have originated from South Africa and it will be rounding off in South
Africa. He also explains that viewers and fans also can be a part of the
selection process as to which Nigerian acts will be performing in South Africa.
“…We have left that opened to the fans to decide, if they go to our website,
they can vote for which artistes they would like to see on stage in South
Africa, we are trying to make sure that we give the fans what they want.
Sponsors of the show, Zulu Kingdom also the South African
province of KwaZulu-Natal was represented at the conference by their
spokesperson, Mr Zozo. Zozo explains that his region in South Africa is proud
to be doing the tour with MTV. Their aim is to open their region up to the
entire continent through music and entertainment which the area is known for. “
We are South Africa’s domestic tourism leader, highly popular among visitors
from throughout continental Africa and increasingly on the ‘must-see, must- do’
lists of discerning travellers. These travellers from all points of the globe
seek and find a unique blend of sophistication, cultural diversity and
excitement – in the most breathtaking setting imaginable, I invite everyone to
come and enjoy the finale of the All stars show in South Africa,” Zozo said
South African top act, The Professor who is also from the
KwaZulu-Natal area of South-Africa, also had a word or two about Nigeria and
the show in genera.
“I am very proud to be here. In fact I am a bit nervous to
be sharing a stage with the likes of Tuface and Davido. I am bringing the South
African spirit to the stage here in Nigeria, and I know that you will feel it,”
said the Kwaito singer, The Professor.
On stage were Tuface Idibia, Ice Prince, The Proffessor from
South Africa and Davido. Each took turns to excite the crowd with their
numerous hits. The event was anchored by the newly employed MTV VJ Search
winner, Ehizojia 'Ehiz. The major highlight of the show was when Davido went
crowd surfing. This is not a usual occurrence in Nigerian shows. Crowd surfing
is when an artiste jumps into the crowd and they crowd carry him around. Davido
was held up high as he was crowd surfing for over two minutes. Remember Eedris
had allegedly tried doing same in his hay days, but he was not caught when he
dived into the crowd. On the whole the show was an enjoyable experience. Though
the event was a bit late, fans showed up in droves.
